You've come a long way, baby: YouTube video uploads turn five

Categories: Social Media

According to the good folks over at Gawker, everybody's favourite video uploading site is celebrating a very special anniversary today. Though YouTube actually turned five this past February, April 23 marks the fifth anniversary of the first video ever uploaded to the site.

Judging from the humble, downright old-fashioned quality of the first clip, I'm guessing no one knew the site would go on to leave competitors like Vimeo in the dust. But YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim was clearly light years ahead of all of us when he decided his 19-second item, entitled "Me at the zoo," was worth sharing with the YouTube audience. Since that first upload, users worldwide have flocked to the site to serve up their own embeddable videos, and the site now generates over 1 billion views a day.
