The Ukrainian economy risks a default in the not-too-distant future, and over the past months President Viktor Yanukovych has actively lobbied both Russia and the European Union for a financial life jacket. But the tensions between these two options have been pulling the society apart.
A surprise November 2013 reversal on a pro-EU trade deal and a pivot towards Russian influence has brought thousands of protesters to the streets. The demonstrations have often turned violent, with tempers stoked by accusations of police violence and loathed anti-protest laws, which were later repealed.
