Antarctica and Greenland's shrinking ice sheets: an animated view

New evidence shows rapid ice loss on massive glaciers

Last Updated: Nov. 29, 2012

A clear scientific picture is finally emerging of the rapid glacial loss in Greenland and the Antarctic.

The animated maps below show new evidence of how these ice masses have been changing over the past several years.

The map at top left shows the surface mass balance (SMB) of the Greenland ice sheet for a given year. The map at top right shows the difference between that year's SMB recording and the 1960-2011 average. Finally, the panel at bottom gives the SMB reading in chart form.
