The volume of dangerous goods shipped by rail across Canada has jumped 30 percent in recent years. The boom in petrochemical and crude-oil shipments is raising new challenges.
Transport Minister Lisa Raitt assures Canadians that 99.997% of rail shipments reach their destination safely. Yet, rail companies reported 3774 incidents and accidents to the Transportation Safety Board between 2000 and 2012.
