'Punk prayer' brings Russian art collective into international spotlight

CBC News Last Updated: March 7, 2014

The feminist art punk collective Pussy Riot has been a thorn in the side of Russian President Vladimir Putin since the now-famous 2012 performance at Moscow's main Orthodox cathedral and the high-profile hooliganism trial that followed.

Freeing the three members of the group, jailed after the "punk prayer" against Putin, became an international cause-célèbre. Street protests sprung up in Canada and other western nations, while musicians like Madonna and Paul McCartney lent their support.
