Canada's aging population

PMO makes calls for changes to OAS

Last Updated: Jan. 31, 2012

Canada's Old Age Security program has been deemed "unsustainable" on its current course, according to recent remarks made by Prime Minister Stephen Harper. OAS, which is funded through taxes, is expected to balloon from $36 billion per year in 2010 to $108 billion in 2030. Also, the ratio of taxpayers to seniors is expected to decline significantly, according to the Prime Minister's Office, from four to one in 2010 down to two to one in 2030. The PMO notes the Canada Pension Plan does not need to be modified. Here's a look at how Canada's population breaks down.
