Canada's plan for nuclear waste management

A Deep Geological Repository: the final resting place for Canada's used nuclear fuel

Oct. 10, 2012

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is charged with finding a site for and building Canada's nuclear waste repository. The plan is to move the millions of used nuclear bundles from facilities in eastern and central Canada to a facility called a Deep Geological Repository in a location that has yet to be chosen. The repository will consist of a network of tunnels 500 metres below the surface of the earth.

Below is a graphic presentation of what the repository will look like and the waste that will be stored in it. Click on the nuclear fuel bundle to start the animation and then follow the instructions in the bottom left hand corner to continue.
