Mapping maximum-security penitentiaries in the country

On April 19, 2012, the federal government announced it would close the maximum-security penitentiary in Kingston, Ont., along with the Regional Treatment Centre located on the grounds of the prison, and the medium-security Leclerc Institution in Laval, Que. Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told a press conference in Ottawa that inmates at the prisons will be moved to other facilities. The map below shows maximum-security prisons in the country as well as some multi-level security institutions, which house maximum-security units in medium-security settings.
