Federal government mulling more lenient marijuana laws
CBC News Last Updated: March 6, 2014
The federal government is contemplating changing marijuana laws, said Justice Minister Peter MacKay Wednesday. The changes might allow police to issue tickets to people carrying small amounts of marijuana instead of laying charges.
The cannabis debate has revved up in recent months with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau calling for legalization of marijuana. Under the Criminal Code, a person carrying marijuana can face a jail penalty of up to five years. The map below shows cannabis use by province by people over the age of 15 in 2012.
