Militant group spurs U.S. military action

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a militant Sunni group, has made inroads in Iraq and Syria, in a bid to create a Sharia-law based Islamic state. Recent attacks prompted the U.S. to launch airstrikes in Iraq, citing the "urgent humanitarian situation" of minorities in the region.

The map below shows the location of the ISIS strongholds. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi minorities have fled their homes.
