Operation Athena

Location: Afghanistan
Canadian personnel: About 2,500

The operation is Canada's contribution to NATO's International Security Assistance Force. This operation includes the Canadian battle group based in Kandahar. It also includes support personnel, such as combat engineers and health services units, and the Provincial Reconstruction Team. The sixth rotation of Operation Athena began in January 2008.

This operation is part of Canada's contribution to the U.S.-led Operation Enduring Freedom. Canadian Forces personnel are involved in training and in the transition of security responsibilities to the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police.

Operation Altair

Location: Persian Gulf
Canadian personnel: 850

In April 2008, HMCS Iroquois, a destroyer from Halifax, and the supply ship HMCS Protecteur and the frigate HMCS Calgary, both from Equimault, B.C., left their home ports to rendezvous in the Caribbean Sea. After a short training period, the three ships will sail to the Persian Gulf region to join Combined Task Force 150, a multinational fleet. Commodore Bob Davidson will take command of CTF 150 from June to September 2008.
