Doomsday Clock: Countdown to nuclear midnight

Last Updated: Jan. 10, 2012

The Doomsday Clock, calculated by scientists as a symbolic measure of how close humankind is to self-destruction, moved a minute closer to midnight on Tuesday, Jan. 10. The clock now stands at five minutes to 12 a.m., a time that represents the obliteration of the human race.

The timepiece hangs at the University of Chicago and has been reset 20 times in the last 60 years to reflect a changing sense of security in a nuclear world. Use the timeline below to read about the clock hands' movements from 1947 to 2012.
