Chicago murder totals, 1991-2012

On Sept. 20, 2013 13 people — including a three-year-old — were shot in a Chicago park. The Associated Press reported that a spokesperson for the city's police called it "a miracle" that there were no fatalities.

Data provided by the Chicago police department indicates that the majority of the homicides committed in the city over the last several years involved guns. The chart below illustrates the total number of murders (involving firearms and other methods) in the city from 1991 to 2012.
