CHART | Airplane accidents and fatalities in Canada 2000-2010

Last Updated: Nov. 7, 2011

From 2000 to 2010, the rate of plane accidents in Canada has decreased. Most of the improvement in the accident rate occurred before Safety Management Systems (SMS) was introduced in 2005. SMS is a planning structure to organize safety risk, taking into account policies, organizational structures and accountability. The rate of fatalities, however, has remained steady, increasing slightly over the past two years. Use the chart below to see the rate of incidents in Canada over the past 10 years. Rates are calculated per 100,000 flight hours. The figures come from the Transportation Safety Board's annual report.
