It's good to see that we are finaly going to be able to bring home the cup back home to the capital. This is our year and thanks to the solid goaltending by Ray Emery and the amazing offensive skills of Daniel Alfredson,Jason Spezza and Dany Heatly wecan finaly have that Stanley cup parade and quiet those obnoxious leaf fans.

The devs were destroyed by Ottawas top line and great goal tending by Ray Emery. Hats off to the Senators they out played the Devils consistantly through out the series and Martin Brodeur did not have his A game to steal the series. Ottawa is no longer the soft finesse team they were in the past and the upcoming series against the Sabres should be awesome. The Sabres and the Senators both have depth, skill and great goal tending, not clear cut favorite, wish my Devils were still in it but am looking forward to this series, it is going to be a good one.

Good to see there's people like Fred Goertzen to bring the ideals of class and style back to reality. According to an interview with Emery, Brodeur told him the last team to beat him won the cup, wished him good luck and told him to go for it. That sounds like a pretty respectful and classy comment to an opposing goalie not to mention pretty tasteful. You sir, are the classless one and the type of person that gives Sens fans a bad name.

I can not believe everyone in the hockey world thinks Marty Brodeur is injured, just because the guy has let in some bad goals. We should go back to the regular season and see that the devils decided to use him in easy games, just so he could get the record for most wins in a season. Playing him in 78 regular season games is the reason he has let in bad goals in the playoffs.

I am thrilled for the Sens and will be so happy for them if they win the cup. They're showing great skill as a team, comfortable and confident.
For the FANS attending home games:
GLAD TO SEE YOU'RE MAKING NOISE!!!
I've been to Ottawa games before and, being such a conservative city, people are reluctant to bang the glass, shout, stand and scream. DO IT!! Your team will love you for it. Let your hair down!

I would like to dedicate this latest thrashing to all Devils..(aka Leaf) fans.
Buffalo is also going down. The Sabres have allowed the most shots on their own net in the playoffs...where's the D???
If they allowed that many shots against the lower seeds then what happens when they meet the mighty Sens...I'll tell you...Sens in 6!!

If the Hot Alfrezza line can keep up the pressure, and the rest of the team can keep chipping in with their superb and timely efforts, the Cup may well return to Canada at long joyous last.

Who did Martin Brodeur have words with at the end of the Jersey series while shaking hands? Looked like some foul language was exchanged. I think it was someone ahead of Neil.

For your information Ottawa fans before you suggest that Marty is not a classy individual, what he said to Emery was "The last goalie to beat me went on to win the Stanley Cup" A bit egotistical but the ultimate compliment. I was rather shocked that all of the hypocritical Ottawa fans were not up in arms after the game 5 win, about playing the TRAP!!! All I have ever heard from Ottawa fans with every Cup the Devils won is that its like watching paint dry and they would rather lose then play it!!! Well guess winning changes all opinions now doesnt it??? Good series, Ottawa was the better team Good luck next round!! Come on NFL Preseason!!!!

Well the Sens are playing their best playoff hockey in the teams' modern history. Next week they face off against buffalo. Certainly not my first choice. There's no doubt the Sens are playing better than the sabres in the playoffs. No doubt the sens got the best of buffalo in the regular season series (5 - 3 for the sens). But there's something just scary about the Sabres. It comes down to this... If the Sabres keep playing the way they have been, the Sens go to the stanley cup final. If the Sabres improve, it's going to be a 7 games series, every game will be hard faught, hard played, and likely come down to which team gets a lucky bounce.
I expect to see a LOT more emotion in this series. The NJ/Ott series was tame, with both teams showing respect for each other, no anomosity. But the Sabres and Sens have some history to work out this season, and while I don't expect any brawls, I certainly expect a very physical game.

The better team won. The Devils struggled at the end of the season and Brodeur was plain worn down. He only missed 4 games, 48 Wins and 12 Shutouts...he was out of gas!! He needs to play less and they need to give the number two goalie some games to play!
Better luck next year!
I hope someone PLUCKS the darn Ducks!!

Looks like Ottawa will be taking on the Buffalo sabers. Will be a very tough series for both teams. I predict all 1 goal games with Ottawa taking it in 7. Ottawa sure is not the team they were a few years ago, so much depth and confidence.

I've been a Senators fan since i've started watching hockey again after a 20 year break or so(delusional leafs fans are part of the reason I quit watching lol). I just hope they can keep the hard work going, then they may just bring home the cup. Even if they fail in the conference final I think they've put the ghosts in their closet to rest.

I knew Ottawa was ending this in five. The numbers said so.
Don Cherry, you predicted Ottawa would loose, guess the collar was too tight saturday nite.
And to Brodeur, how tasteless you are. Emery put you to shame, you belittled his abilities and he beat you at your own game. When all was said and done, you neglected to offer up your crow to him when you spoke highly of the skaters on the Senators, but missed Mr. Important. We do not know what was said at centre ice at hand shaking time, but I hope it was an apology and congratulations.
And did I see big Louie mouth the words to Coach Murray " Go all the way!"?
The Ottawa Senators have done what most thought impossible.
Coach Murray, congratulations on finally getting to the third round.
To the Ottawa Senators, OH MAN, your good!!!

Ah, the sweet taste of victory. To all you nay-sayers, Ottawa has now beaten the best offensive player in the league and the best goaltender in the league. We're halfway to the cup, and there are definite challenges in the way, but nobody can claim the Sens don't have what it takes.
This final game was excellent. Shaky start for us, but we showed our grit in the 2nd period by overcoming the deficit and taking a commanding lead.
The third period was a thing of absolute beauty. The most boring style of hockey ever developed, and perfected by Lou Lamiorello's New Jersey Devils...and now they had to eat it. Karma rocks.
Props to NJ though, they're a classy team, good competitors, and in a series of one-goal games, they were certainly a challenge. I would LOVE to have heard what Brodeur said to Emery when the teams shook hands. It looked encouraging. Bravo Brodeur, and I look forward to cheering you in 2010!

In response to Kevin Sincennes, I know what you mean by fake Sens Fans because they won tonight all the flags will be coming out. Its really tiredsome hearing all the negative stuff coming from people and the media. I knew they would've finished it tonight and I am very proud of them. Once again thank-you Murray for giving the Sens true grit. GO SENS GO, finally you can shut the media up for awhile.

Love the photo on the Stanley Cup page right now: Alfie pasting a New Jersey player against a sign saying, 'Dream Big! Win Big!' That photo says everything you need to know about this year's Senators.
Sens are going all the way this year. They know what they have to do, and they know how to do it.

What can i say.....i'm not at all biast in any way....but the SENS are definitely a different team ! I am a loyal fan, in fact i drove 1500 km's twice this year just to see a game ! As a fan you can feel the difference in this team. They've put together a great defensive core and the big guns have finally elevated their game. When Spezza starts to defend, Alfredsson starts hitting, and Heatly Keeps scoring, and all other 3 lines are pumping.......IT'S A NO BRAINER !!!!!!!!

Maybe, just maybe this will force NJ to revisit their style of play for future seasons. I for one can not stand watching any team play Jersey with their trap wait and pounce approach. It may have been effective for them but I sense change in the air for next season. Marty, I love ya man, but if a high flying team gets more than 25 shots on you per game, you are going to lose. "The Jersey Trap" was a huge factor in your personal success. There isn't any team left better than the Senators. Buffalo has been lucky not good in the playoffs with the Isles, and the Rangers. Bring it on. Wouldn't a Hasek - Emery showdown look good for sentimental reasons? Anyway, the worried look on Lou's face is poetic justice. Dress McGratton for tonight, we need to see a body count in the first period.

If Ottawa can beat the Devils in Ottawa, with 5 ottawa sens on the ice vs 9 of them (4 refs and 5 NJ players) on the ice than I think that the cup will be ours. An up hill battle builds character.

I have a question about a comment that was apparently made by the great hockey god Martin brodeur. Did he say Ray looked shakey in nets? How can He see Ray with all the jerseys planted squarely infront of him most of each game in the series? Wait... I have 2 questions..... Which goalie put a skate in position to give Dany Heatley a goal on a shot from the goal line that would have otherwise passed right through the crease harmlessly?

Been a Sens fan ever since they got the team on the modern era. I've watched them fail so many times. Still, they're playing these playoffs like I've not seen before.
Do I think it's possible for them to take the Cup? That depends. If they continue the work ethic they've shown through most of the year, then it may be possible.
That being said, going up against Buffalo (who I predict to beat the Rangers) will be one hard fought series. If they can win that series, I don't doubt that whomever the West brings into the Final will be as difficult a challenge as the Sabres. Not saying a sweep, mind you, but in 6.
Good luck Sens. Keep doing what you've been doing and you'll go far.

The Senators have a surprisingly strong back end in Emery... he's carrying them more than they know.
Strange to see a semi-final series go in five... six was the fewest predicted prior to the opener, and the 3-1 lead for the Sens was not in the cards, as far as I'm concerned. I think it's fantastic, but I couldn't have called it.

The SENATORS are the only real Canadian team left. They have 15 Canadian born players on their active roster. The most in the NHL. It's all heart!!! That's why they are where they are. I hope they won't be playing Bettman and his zebra's, because it'll be that much harder to bring the cup back where it belongs!!! The Senators would have swept the devils if game 2 was called correctly. IMO, game 2 was handed to the devils. Now, finish off the devils boys!!! SENS ALL THE WAY!!!

Wow, Game 3 rocked. Can't wait for game 4. Now that round is one done, the media has moved on from Sidney C and onto to their next crush, Marty B. Seriously, who gives a flying #$%& about his new blocker and trapper. Who? Nobody. Stop talking about his stupid crappy equipment! NJ is a great team, they're just not playing with the same drive as the sens. Now the real question, who would we rather play, Buf or NY? I think we can beat the sabes but the rangers are such a wild card. Anywho, congrats to the sens on taking it to the devils, can't wait to see Alfi and crew in the conference finals.

The only reason Buffalo sings both anthems when two american teams play is to please their fan base. Of course you're going to play O'Canada when you've got so many Canadians crossing the border just to see a hockey game. Don't bite the hand that feeds you!
Fans can boo all they want when the opposing team hits the ice - just don't do it in the american anthem!

To JerseyJay:
I can understand you respect Lou Lamoriello for what he has done with his team, winning a few Stanley cup, and finding the way to make the most boring style of hockey, but to me he is still a Jerk looking for glory. Firing the head coach 2 games before playoff was the oddest thing I have never seen. The coach was doing a great job and ''Lou'' was looking for more glory, no more explanation needed.
He's also a paranoid freak for bringing a FBI agent and his own buses+drivers from Jersey, just because he was suspecting ''spies'' from Ottawa. Guess what, all this was useless because the Sens will still crush them.
To everyone else, please back up the last Canadian team, you know the Americans would be behind thier last team...

Are you kidding me??? Ottawa fans dissing Lou??? Lou is the most respected man in the league!!! He may have his rash ways with dealing with his coaches, but anyone who has ever been under Lou will tell you he takes care of his people. Even the coaches he fires are still in the system until they decide to work at another team. Unlike Geriatric Muckler who has won nothing in his career as General Manager, Lou has controlled everything NJ has done since 1988.His resumes is as follows.
1. 3 Stanley Cups
2. 4 Stanley Cup Appearances
3. 2 President Trophies
4. 6 Eastern Conference Finals appearances
5. Only missed the Playoffs once since 1988
6. And not to mention the league is full of ex Devils draft picks that moved on for greener pasteurs.
So before you open up your big mouths about a GM take a look at the facts. Who cares about the coach of a team its the first guy you guys call for everytime your team goes out in the playoffs, so dont all of a sudden care about a coaches well being in this league!!!!

I'm getting really tired of hearing how the Sens won't be able to "prove themselves" until they have gone all the way in the playoffs (actually, I usually just hear that from media types, not real fans). The Sens have already proven themselves to be something special in these playoffs. This is a great team and if it turns out that they are one of 29 teams that don't win the Stanley Cup this year, they are still a great team. To the team, thanks for the great ride so far.

Another day another win. Good game by Ottawa. They are showing that they can win in all sorts of situations unlike past years. They let their foot off the gas a bit in the second but still overcame. Good to see. I hope they wrap it up Saturday night but if not they definitely will at home. The crowd this year has been stellar. You can see how it pumps them up when they play. I have been following the sens since they first returned to ottawa and have had season tickets for 8 years and I have never seen this team look so good. Gone is the soft sens I used to see in playoffs past unwilling to give or recieve hits and gut out those 1 goal games. This a team that has now matured in all aspects of the game, backchecking, forechecking, hits and pure grit. A team that is listening to and believing in a very experienced and smart coach. I have been waiting a very long time for this moment, it has been a long difficult process through the bankruptcy, uncertain ownership, contract holdouts(Yashin you greedy euro)spoilt rookies(Daigle)and dissapointing playoff loses. This team is on a mission, they will not be denied. The Stanley cup is coming to Canada and to the city it first came from Ottawa.

Now I don't know where to start. We have been playing true playoff hockey and if Emery can keep us in the games we can beat anyteam with the work ethic we have been bringing lately. Speeza is blocking shot, Volchenkov is just a machine, Heatley is number 1 in scoring as of this morning, and Alfie is leading the way in effort and grit. This IS a PLAYOFFTEAM. Wouldn't it be great being a REAL Sens fan after they win the cup and not a bus jumper. Trust me the amount of Sens fans there will be soon will be crazy. I've been there through the 4 game sweeps, the loss in game 7. This year is different they vare paying liker a team possesed. We should have swept Pittsburg but we melted down in the 3 and allowed 3 goals after being up 3-1. We should have swept Jersey sorry Broduer but game 2 Broduer won it. Senators are the real deal this year people, I get goose bumps thinking about it. Murray is not in the runing for coach of the year but after we win the cup people will praise him much more. Look art what he has done to this team in a matter of 1 year. Grit, determination, poise, patiance this team has it. If it was the old Sens we would not have won game 3 or came back in game 2 with 20 seconds left. We would have been trying the fancy play and would have been tentative and timid, Now WE control the game and lose them, or win them. If not for 2 periods so far we would have swept both teams. SENS ARE BRIGING IT HOME POEOPLE. SORRY LEAF FANS AND CO WHAT CAN YOU SAY ABOUT US NOW. First and foremost Thank-You Brian Murray for showing the Sens what it is to play as a team. You the respect the team has for Murray all around. Alfredsson is my #1 guy. I believe they can finish it on Saturday as long as they stick to the game plan. Neil was amazing in lastnights' game. This is their best year by far playing hockey

I have to rebutt the comments made by Cern of Calgary.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with Don Cherry making pro-armed forces comments on air. Afterall, our soldiers are in a hell-hole trying to improve Afghani life with everybody there against them. Don't forget the soldiers are people and hockey fans too. Unfortunately, most of the time Don is recognizing the ultimate sacrifice being given by these people as they give their lives for their country. Would you do that, would you give your life for your country? You must be a very cold-hearted person to want these recognitions ignored.
Now that I've had my rant, I have to say the Sens look good. I'm not a big fan of the team and I'm certainly not a band-wagon jumper (my team didn't even make the playoffs and No it isn't the Leafs or Habs!!), but they have alot more confidence this year. They're alot more physical and it's only because of Marty Brodeur that it wasn't a sweep. I think they could go all the way, but they'll have a big challenge with either Buffalo or New York. Don't forget, the Western teams look good too. It should make for some pretty good hockey in the Conference finals.

Fantastic effort put in by all lines in the Senators. Shaky ref'ing (mistaken call on Gomez?), and holding up the game just to debate a NJ goal?!
With such a solid effort, I will be amused by how the media will react and talk about how badly the Sens played. I really wish CBC/Globe Media would just report hockey and talk about how this team has serious potential to take the cup!

I have to say it, this isn't your Dad's Sens team.
This is an entirely different team than we have seen in past years. They are doing what it takes to win and have been overpowering in both series. Geez, when you see Spezza blocking shots you know something is different. I thought this series would go 6 games, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Sens walk (skate) into Jersey and win it in 5.
Watching the Detroit vs San Jose game after the Sens game, I was struck by a great example of the Sens difference this year. In the last minute of the Sens game, with the Jersey net empty, the Sens got the puck in the Jersey end. They didn't have a clear shot so they (Fisher & McHammond) buried it in the corner. In the Detroit game, same situation with San Jose leading except their player tried to score from a bad angle. Detroit got the puck, went up the ice with 2 SJ players caught, and scored with 30 seconds left to tie the game.
Thank you San Jose for providing such great comparison.

Great game tonight. It's ironic that the exciting series seem to be in the EAST this year?! I hope Vancouver can turn their series around... 2 Canadian teams in the final would be awesome! My Sens are doing great so far but unfortunately will not have any respect unless they win it all. I guess this is the price for making the playoffs for 10 years. I'm a huge fan of Hockey Night in Canada and of the Senators (always have been). As a hockey fan, I think it's inappropriate for HNIC to be turned into a soapbox for Don Cherry's opinion that anyone against Canadian military involvement in Afghanistan is un-patriotic and is against the men and women who have chosen the military as their profession. I won't turn this comment into my own soapbox but will say that Don and Ron's ongoing rants are inappropriate unless equal airtime during HNIC is given to the point of view that Canadian forces should not be in Afghanistan, a view widely held by patriotic Canadians across the country. Since I'm certain no one wants to see our hockey spoiled by political debate, I suggest Ron and Don and HNIC in general keep their opinions on world politics to themselves.

I just have to say in general that I am DISGUSTED with the quality of the officiating in these playoffs. I am not saying this merely to complain about lack of scoring chances for any Canadian team, but it is truely deplorable. Tonight I saw at least two vicious trips, a holding call, and a cross check go unnoticed. And yet, minor hooks are called left right and centre. I agree that refs can't watch everything, but it really seems that they are catching all the wrong calls in this playoff season.
On a different note, the Senators are playing extremely well right now! Assuming they can continue to put a solid 60 minutes together, the Devils are toast. Kudos to the Alfredsson line which is ON FIRE, and Ray Emery for continuing to be a monster between the pipes. He just keeps improving, and it's great to see.
Also, at the risk of being slightly un-patriotic, I have to give props to Martin Brodeur, who is the only reason the Devils were not swept. There's a reason he's the number one in the world.

I was away from Ottawa for much of the regular season, and I still can't believe some people were calling for getting rid of Alfie, Spezza and others midway through the season.
This team is clicking; they've got every aspect of the game covered: skill, speed, grit, defence, offence, goaltending, discipline, and it starts with the Captain. Tonight's effort was just one of many examples.
We are up 3-1 in the series. The Devils are done. Rangers or Sabres, I don't care who's next. This is our time.

I stand by my comments of April 25. The Senators' play is much more disciplined than the Devils. The Devils will come out in game 5 and play with their hearts. This will have the effect of creating just enough opportunities for the Senators to have a 1 or 2 goal win.
I'd be surprised now if it won't be Ottawa in 5. This is really the most difficult series of the playoffs, primarily because of Martin Brodeur.

I'm here to watch a hockey game, and you're on air to discuss hockey. I don't care how relevant it happens to be, please try to stick to commenting on what you're getting paid to comment on. Its a bit silly here in Ontario, or for that matter Canada. A mass of fans and media still holding on to a relic era called "The Toronto Maple Leafs". Sure they won they're cups, but were you alive then, or old enough to remember? Chances are no, but your beloved parents and grandparents were and for them, you keep the love for the team strong. I have trouble understanding our media in Canada(cbc, tsn,Ron+Don, every news paper but the O-sun), they're not supposed to take sides, but they do. If Ottawa scores a goal a full second after New Jersey's goalie is tapped in the leg (and doesn't fall mind you),it becomes a "Highly Controversial Goal" or if chris Neil delivers a SHOULDER check CLEANLY to a player within less than half a second from when the player releases the puck, and the player so happens to sustain an injury, it becomes a "Late Elbow Hit". Everyone hates the Senators. Make up names like "Playoff Chokers". But when was the last time the leafs brought the cup home, or made the playoffs. You don't want to write about that EH? I'm also sorry to say, I know its a bit tough for him but.... Does Tucker need to launch himself and become airborne (skates leaving the ice) for every other hit he puts out in the corners? No one says ship to him. But oh yeah.... He's a Leaf

This is a response to Michelle. Brodeur is playing amazing so to say that he has hardly performed is far from correct. Brodeur was perhaps a little shaky in game one but clearly he has returned to his dominant form in game 2 and 3. He can be the best goalie in the world but one player is not going to win the series. Brodeur definitely provides the Devils with a major defensive asset but sooner or later a puck will squeak through. If the boys in front of him can't put some pucks in the net he's going down with them. I am a sens fan but this series is intense. Great series, great hockey.

I have been following the SENS closely all year, when possible out here on the TV if not via internet. The SENS have had their ups and down this year but their shear determination not to be controlled and dominated during these playoffs is absolutely beautiful, the NJD will not be able to handle the constant physical play and Brodeur can’t possibly keep the SENS at bay all the time. SENS in 6, NJD wins will be gifts from Brodeur only.

I think I know a way New Jersey can generate some offence. Since he is the only player on NJ that seems to care and is great with his stick, put Brodeur on the powerplay on the point. He's also quick enough to get back to the net. Have you seen his wristshot? Its better than most of the NJ blueliners. Right from game 1 this series has been the Senators against Brodeur. The rest of the NJ squad are just pylons to Ottawa. I feel bad for Brodeur really. He would be so much better with any of the other 29 teams that dont play that horrible style of hockey. Brodeur is the one who's "trapped" in New Jersey. Tonights game 4 I'll be there watching Ottawa pepper Brodeur with shots. He'll stand on his head again but Ottawa will prevail. This series could have been a sweep for Ottawa if it hadnt have been for the heroics of Brodeur.
I can't wait for Lamareillo's end of the season pet project to blow up in his face. Julien deserved better than to have an egotistical jackass think he can run a hockey club.
P.S Did I hear right after Game 2 that it was the first sellout of the year in the swamp? First???? What is the new NJ arena going to provide? 4 to 5 thousand more empty seats on top of the 2 - 3 thousand already not filled?
Yikes
Maybe its time to get rid of the President, General Manager, Coach, Skate Sharpener, and facial hair trimmer thats running this team downhill. Seems like a lot but its only 1 person.

I think the Sens are a great team, but the fans on the other hand annoy me. this is because they only talk about games they win and not the one's they lose. they talk their big talk, but after the series when their team doesn't make it, they're the saddest people in town. i've been a devil's fan for 22 years, and i've seen the devil's in their worst times and i enjoyed the good times. but i always talk about the whole series, not just one game. enough already sen's fans. grow up and enjoy the game of hockey. and by the way guy from winnipeg that said ottawa fans don't trash other teams, come to Ottawa during playoffs and then you can see how wrong you are.

Rule 69.1: Goals should be disallowed only if: 1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper's ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or 2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

Coming from the biggest Devils fan North of the border, I will say this.... The Sens have been playing extremly well, and the key to NJ is Brodeur to play the way he did in Game 3 and for the power play to wake up for the Devils, If they can, then this is the only way my beloved Devils will Beat the Sens. I will give credit where it is due (unlike Sens fans) The Sens are poised to win this series if they can keep it together.... Grow up Ottawa fans and stop with negative campaigns on other teams and just be positive about your own, you have a great team focus on that! The Senators are a finely tuned machine that works because all the pieces fit together. From the blue paint at the end, to the imaginary red line. We have a Captain that cares about his team, team mates, and the fans. We have a club that shows up and works hard at giving everyone what they desire. We are not fans of a dirty club. We don't have an Avery, we don't have a Bertuzzi. I have been a die hard since they came back to the NHL. I have Alfie's autograph tattooed into my arm, beneath the Sens logo, and waiting to add the year for the cup.

It looks like the Senators are beating the Devils at their own game. The Devils sit back waiting for a mistake that never comes.
Brodeur is a great goalie, but cannot win the series by himself against the second-highest scoring team in the league. You have to have good defense and offence, the Sens have both. The Devils don't have the offensive depth the Senators do. Simple as that. Sens will win.

What a game last night. I'm a little unclear on goalie interference, but I watched a bunch of replays and it seems like Brodeur's foot was outside of the crease, and he was just as responsible for clipping Fischer.
Both these teams are battling hard but I think that Ottawa is just playing hot all around and the Devils D just dont seem to be firing on all cylinders otherwise I'd expect Devils in 7. If it keeps going as is, I expect Ottawa in 6!

The Devils trap has been totally ineffective in first 3 games, their scoring chances are few and far between.
Ottawa is out-hitting, out-chancing, and out-trapping NJ in every game so far.
The only reason it isn't 3-0 SENS is Brodeur. He might steal a game or two...but he won't win the series by himself.
For those who are convinced the sens will choke: No one who has seen them play in these playoffs could contest that this team is playing the best post-season hockey in the history of this franchise. They are a FAR CRY from the defensive breakdowns, mental errors, and sloppy play that have cost them in the past. Even the two losses they have had so far this year came despite badly out-playing their opponents.
They keep this up...Ottawa might just get the cup.

It's pretty ridiculous to decide who will win the playoffs based on regular season play. First of all, the Devils only had two more points. If this or their overall ranking means they are better, how come a team with less points than both the Sens and the Devils ranked third?
The regular season also has nearly zero stress pressure and therefore the dynamics in the playoffs are completely different.
Brodeur is a whiner. His own player edged Fisher into him which caused him to tap Brodeuer's skate with his own. If Brodeur had been in the crease for once, it never would have happened. If he had shaken it off and gotten into position, he would not have been scored on. It's as simple as that. Being a a goalie means reacting fast, not whining instead.
He also has no right to complain after tripping a Sens player on a breakaway. The commentators called it a great poak check, but he was out of the crease and never even touched the puck, only the player. No penalty was called. Brodeur is a sore loser.

Why is Brodeur unstoppable?Emery got the shut out. Brodeur vs. Fisher contact. The Blue ice for other goalies, Blue ice and light blue ice for Brodeur. Was intentional contact by Fisher or was Brodeur trying to draw contact by being out of position. Turning like he did put himself out of position for the quick shot for Priessing.By pushing off before Fisher made contact he would have been in position to make the save.Ron MacLean and Don Cherry (great tandem for HNIC) viewed the play many times and no comment about Brodeur's ability to turn into Fisher to make contact, only Fisher at fault!!I have a daughter that is a goalie, so I/her have a bias for goalies, but I think Brodeur fooled himself this time not Luc R. PS. Brodeur is a great goalie, have him in my hockey pool, but not perfect.

Just finished watching game 3. The better team won for sure. Very good game for Ottawa.
Emery was solid. I am so impressed at Ottawa's approach now. Defensive hockey first. It creates so much more offense which our 4 lines of skilled forwards crave. Kudos to Martin Brodeur tonight and all 3 games. Thank god he is our #1 on Team Canada. Marty you rule. All that aside, If it wasnt for Brodeur, the series would be 3 - 0 . Oh my god Sens Fans, Jason Spezza is blocking shots??? Alfie is hitting??? Comrie is fighting??? Have you ever seen so much determination from Ottawa? It is awesome. We have seen so many years of high flying Senators (which is what the Sabres are this year)do so well in the regular season and falter in the playoffs, we are all sick of it.
I went to game 5 of the Pens series and I have never seen the crowd at Scotia Bank Place so electric. We kidded ourselves thinking we had the dream team for so many years until now. Offensively minded only until this year. Determination, grit and physical play has been key this year. I am glad Ottawa faced bad times early in the season. They havent seen that in so long. They have bought into the system very well and will take the Devils in 6. The Sabres wont be much of a challenge because they keep playing their B game so far this post season.

At about the 3 minute mark of the 2nd period, Mike Comrie carried the puck past the NJ goal. Brodeur tripped Comrie with his stick, but didn't hit the puck before the trip. Why isn't that a penalty, as it would be with any other player on the ice? Comrie was upset because there was no call by the refs, and rightly so.

I was just thinking why, when jersey had a delayed penalty against them,at the end of the first period,,that it wasnt called when it was touched the first time. With this extra time on the clock, ottawa would have been able to at leaste count there second goal of the game.I find it very sad hockey has gone to the lime light of the ref..

Mark from Ottawa - that comment was in extremely poor taste. Please take your homophobic mockery elsewhere, even if it wasn't disrespectful it has nothing to do with hockey. Being childish does nothing to help your so-called 'argument'
Ottawa has indeed won the Cup (nine times if memory serves me right), however that was only in its older incarnation almost a century ago; basing an argument on performances by players who are no longer alive, let along actively playing hockey, is absurd. By extention they have made no finals appearances in its current incarnation, unlike the Canucks.

Well ....
We're down near the Finals and CBC suddenly remembers that there's still a hockey team in Ottawa !!!!!
Sure would be nice if HNIC would keep the Sens in mind next REGULAR season, and let Toronto and Montreal ride the pine a bit.
That is , if you don't mind us "Southern boys" rooting for Canadian teams ! ! !
Honestly , folks, CBC coverage and commentary

Ottawa is OVER-RATED!
The FACTS are:
Goalies win games.
NJ has a better goalie.
Don't believe me? Who is second only to Roy for the most all-time wins? Who just broke the record for single season wins that stood for THIRTY THREE YEARS?
...And who was the rock who not only withstood the storm, but helped lead his team to THREE cups?
I'm sure the Sens soiled their shorts when the Devils came roaring back in game one...but the true NJ fans - we expected it. Just like we expected them to knock off Tampa when everyone else said it "couldn't be done".... And as always the Devils did the "impossible"...

It's unfortunate that a hockey franchise such as the Leafs takes it's fans as suckers. The board of directors for that team knows it will sell out the ACC no matter what they throw on the ice. The Senators have made an effort to find a way to win the cup. Who knows when that will be but at least we have something to look forward to.

We won, but it was too close. 4 goals should have buried the Devils, but they came back. This is going to be a close fought series: the good news is Brodeur has spent the playoffs lettign goals go by him, the bad news is that Gomez and Gionta were let free. EGG is not as good as Crosby-Malkin-Staal; the shut-down game should have been much better. However, the Devil's meltdown in period one was spectacular. Both teams are facing problems but Ottawa can outscore Jersey any day, and with Brodeur playing only mediocre, this one is probably a wrap. Sens in 5.

I'm sorry leafs-nation, but it's incorrect to say "bye bye Sens" if you think they're about to join the leafs on the links; More like "hello hello Sens".
You should win a cup in the last 15 years to earn the right to mock a 15 year drought. You should win a cup in less than a dozen play-offs to earn the right to mock a potential cup-run in a dozen play-offs.
Cheering for your own team in the heat of competition is commendable; Jeering another for the sake of jeering is boorish.
For your bashing to be any more than outright laughable I suggest waiting for your team to actually make the play-offs ... and I welcome the leafs to do it. More quality hockey in Canada is a fantastic thing!

For those of you who that keep referring to the Sens as a European team, last time I checked Alfie was the only Swede on the team. We've got a great Canadian line-up with players like Heatley, Spezza, Fisher, Philips, Redden, Vermette and Neil, just to name a few. And the Sens have showed alot of Canadian heart this post season. To "T-Bone" in Toronto.
First of all your comment about fans supporting a team is mis-guided. The reason Canadian teams have gone to the US is because hockey has slowly but surely been going the way of every other professional sport in that the amount of revenue they can generate has become more important than the actual sport. The Jets and Nordiques are 2 good examples of such teams. True - they couldn't remain competative in the market, but that was due to a lack of money - not lack of fans within their own market. Just that those markets were too small to compete with big American money markets where people with more money than brains will spend any amount to see hockey because they think its kinda cool and exciting.
Those of us here who wish to support Canadian teams even if its not our favorite team do so because we remember what hockey used to be about. I'll bet many of us have pretty good O-Pee-Chee card collections from the 60's and 70's and many of us would support the Leafs if they were the only Canadian team left in the playoffs - despite their proven propensity for choking!
You claim to know what hockey rivalries are about, but you are sucked in by the big shiny American marketing machine and like many people these days, have forgotten where hockey came from and what makes it great!
GO SENS!!!

Both these teams are evenly matched, but the Devils have an intangible that the Sens do not. They know what it takes to win and have won in the past (3 Cups in recent memory). Experience should not be overlooked in this series, plus the fact that if Brodie is on his game, he can steal a series.

First of all, most of the New Jersey offense comes from a few players; and Devils have 19 goals so far, Sens have 18. The highest scoring player for the Devils is Z.Parise, with 6 goals. The most for Sens is 3 goals. The most points for Devils are 9(i think) from Scott Gomez. Most points for Sens; Alfreddson with 6. All of the Sens offensive talent are spread out, and the Devils talent is pretty much a few key players. If the sens can shut down those players, and noone else steps up, Devils are gone, no matter how good Brodeur is.

Canadians do not need to support every Canadian team. There are enough hockey fans in each market to support each team. If a team cant get support from fans the city doesnt deserve a team. It's that simple. By the looks of playoff attendance it might be sooner than later.
As a Leafs fan, I would like to see the Sens fold altogether. That is what sports rivalries are all about. Ottawa is junk and will lose in 5. Emery couldn't stop a streetcar if he jumped in front of it. Spezza is a hack, Alfredson is a baby and Brodeur is just too good.

The defining moment in the playoffs so far was the Senators' play in period 1 of the last game of the first series. First of all, this showed how defensively focussed the Senators can be. For those who didn't catch the game, they were shorthanded and very shorthanded much of the period. Secondly, the Senators proved something to themselves in that clutch. They did not crumble, and they did not break the plan.
The most disciplined team will come out on top in this series. First team to crack loses.

I love Toronto but they always blow it at the last minute so maybe now when they are practising there golf swings the other canadian teams can try to bring it and home and next year and we can prove that Canada is Hockey. i think the important battles are Ottawa's 4 scoring lines vs. Brodeur. defensively and offensively Ottawa was one of the leaders in most categories this year and I think NJ is nowhere as deep talent wise as Ottawa. I look to guys like Mike Commerie and Chris Neil to continue to elevate their games. The biggest threat to NJ however is the Captain. Daniel Alfredsson showed incredible focus against Pittsburgh and played incredibly, doing far more on the ice than his 6 points(13th in the league) would show. I've been an ardent Sens Fan since they stole my Jets and I can't remember seeing Alfredsson looking this intense in a playoff before. I also think this year the sens have Learned how to battle for the puck at every turn as a team . their flying counterattacks generated from a strong trap at the blue-line will breakdown NJ Defensive positioning and open up ice. as for the NJ net, if they can make Brodeur move laterally and create a screen in front the shooters can and will beat him!

I think that the sens will win this series. they managed to keep Crosby pointless for two games and they shutdown Malkin Stall Roberts and Rechi they have a better defense then Tampa bay and a well balanced offense. the devils barely squeaked out of round one. they wil have to play a lot better to in round two if they want to have a chance. also how much of the devils goal scoring can be atributed to skilled players and how much can be contributed to Holmquists lack of experience in goal? I have been watching the Sens lose now for a long time in the playoffs. I have watched them have bad luck and I've watched them choke. This year is different. They are going to easily put away the Devils. It will probably be done in five games. Brodeur might steal that one game. Ottawa is taking the cup back to it's true home in the nations capital.

I agree that this is a psychological game as well as a physical game. If Ottawa can keep their focus and determination, and if they don't become frustrated (as Spezza has been saying) with the NJ playing style or by losing 1-2 games, then they will win the series. This team has a lot of depth, and players are stepping up to take on new roles (e.g., Heatley playing defense). This team has both skill and grit. Sens in 6. They will then beat Buffalo in the conference final and go on to win the cup, which will be even more sweet if they play Hasek in Detroit! GO SENS GO!!!

Am I the only one who's concerned that Ottawa will forget that they're not playing the Penguins any more and try to use the same two-man trap that worked so effectively against Crosby? The problem is that there's no single player to protect on the Devils. Looking forward to hearing "where's the defense?" on the first few Jersey goals of this series. They need to pick up the pace on their power plays, too. Sens in seven if they don't get swept.

The Devils are a great team but I believe Ottawa will take this series.
This year has been different in Ottawa for many reasons. The Sens are finding more ways to beat their oponents. They are banging and grinding and doing anything to get wins.
These are the qualities that cup-winning teams need...to win by scoring goals, by coming from behind, and by holding on to a one goal lead.

One thing's for sure, this series will look completely different than the Sens vs. Pens series. The Devils love to control the game, trap out the opponents, and jump at the chances generated by their defense.
Ottawa has the potential scoring that the Lightning has, which proves that they will score. But also they have good defense that could stop the high flying young scorers of the Pens.
Offense: Ottawa > Devils by a huge margin.
Defense: Devils > Ottawa by a decent margin.
Goaltending: Brodeur > Everyone else...Emery included.
Physical/Toughness/Discipline: The difference maker right there. Whoever can play physical while staying out of the box will likely come out of this series on top.
For Ottawa, expect them to continue throwing the body around. Not sure how the Devils will respond to this.
I say Sens in 6 or 7... with Brodeur stealing a game or two for the NJ. Ottawa will likely out-shoot the Devils in almost every game, so it falls on Brodeur to steal the games.

Never liked the Devils, however they do have a good logo. Hopefully it wont be a boring series with NJ's defensive style, but if Ottawa gets some early leads then that might open things up a bit. Brodeur is an excellent goalie so the Sens need to be patient, hopefully they'll smoke 'em anyway. I'd almost prefer the Sabres, but Sens in 7 games.

Why did the league give NJD a couple of extra days rest for this series? Wouldn't it make more sense to start it today (Tuesday, Apr.24) considering that the NJD/Tampa series ended Sunday ? This appears more unfair since the Canucks/Ducks series starts tomorrow, giving the Canucks only 1 day rest. Where is Bettman in all of this; oh right Lou is actually running the league for the benefit of NJD.

The Ottawa Senators have something to prove this year and the way they played in the first round, definatly, shows great potential. Brodeur and the Devils are a strong team, defensively, but did not score many goals in comparison with Ottawa. My Sens will previal if they keep on attacking, play great, solid defence and handle the trap by the Devils, this serious will be over soon.
I would love to see Ottawa pull a sweep to rest up, but the Devils will win, I think a game or two. Its going to be up to Brodeur to steal a game. I will say and predict...
Ottawa in Five, they will steal a game the Devils, but Razor and the Spezza line will deem to strong for the Devils to hold off.
Good luck boys, Go Sens Go.

I think this series will be closer than Ottawa's last series with Pittsburgh, of course, everyone has to respect Brodeur, he is the best and can steal games, plus if Jersey gets into the trap, they are nearly impossible to beat, but if Ottawa keeps pounding Jersey like they did Pittsburgh, they will crumble to the mighty Sens, even Buffalo didn't look as impressive as the Senators did in the 1st round, so Buffalo and Ottawa in eastern final, Sens will take Jersey in 6 as they will prove too much offensively and physically for the Devils. Let's just hope the referee's don't decide the series.

Just like New Jersey wore out Tampa Bays one line, Ottawa will wear out New Jerseys two with their four. New Jerseys goaltending is obviously superior but their defence is their weakest link. Senators have shown the talent they have on all four lines. Devils indeed have a very strong goalie, but thats all they have that will keep them in the game. All in all, I feel that the Senators will prevail and take the series in 6 or 7. It will be a very close series. Brodeur vs Senators 4 lines.

This series will be all about patience and goaltending. Although Ottawa has four deep lines, so do the Devils. In the Tampa series New Jersey ran with three lines, its forth seeing very little ice, as they tried to hold off the St. Louis line. Playing the Senators will allow the icetime to be shared a little more giving them a better balance. The teams match up pretty well:
Offense: Ottawa, Defense: Even, Goaltending: Jersey, PP: Ottawa, PK: Jersey.
Still, Ottawa is a stacked team with pretty much every player being able to contribue when the pressure is on. They are hungry for playoff success and they've got a solid goaltender with Emery back there. Frankly, it's going to be very close.
The difference will be whether the EGG line and Brodeur can keep the hard-working Devils in the games by playing consistent. If not, the Sens will wrap this one up quick.
On the other hand, Ottawa CAN NOT crack under the pressure here. The Devils have been here before more times than we can count and they've suceeded where most teams have failed again and again. If Ottawa can't stay calm and patient, the Devils will take advantage and capture the momentum. If Murray can keep his team under control and away from the intense scrutiny of the media, Ottawa will win.
However, the Devils are the underdogs in this series and they seem to play better that way.
Devils in 7.

While I'd like to agree with everyone and say Sens in 6, I cannot underestimate the strength of the Devils' defense and their goaltending. I still think the Senators have the edge, but it's a razor's edge at best (sorry Emery, no pun intended). I'll predict Sens in 7.
And yeah, the trap is deadly dull to watch. Three championships in 12 years, and the Devils play to a half-empty arena for a reason folks.

Hmm...this I think will be an interesting match up, and I think it can get pretty exciting. As a Devils fan I heard a lot about the first series between the Devils and Lightning saying it was going to be a terribly boring series, but it turned out to be quite entertaining. The Sens do have 4 lines of depth, but so do the Devils. However they were really quiet and I feel that is due to the fact that they had to be very defensive against Tampa's big 3. The Devils defence had to be careful and could not always contribute to the play because they had to make sure they were not giving up rushes. Ottawa has more scoring threats and the Devils need to play the same way they did against the Lightning, only more fierce and finish their checks more often. You cannot compare Martin Brodeur to Ray Emery, it is like apples and oranges.
This is going to go the stretch I think and of course I am hoping the Devils prevail, but it is really tough to tell until the play a couple games.

Brodeur is like a wall, but then so is Ray Emery.
Ottawa however is stronger and has more depth both upfront and at the blue line. Ottawa has younger faster legs and will be able to win most battles of the puck in the corners without having to get overly physical which either tires you out faster or if its a hit takes you out of the play as well as the man you hit.

This series will be a good test for Ottawa. Both teams are very good, match up well, but Ottawa does have a minor advantage in scoring, defence and depth. Goaltending goes to Brodeur, no offense to Emery who has been very good. For Ottawa to win the series, they will have to maintain those advantages 100% of the time, and that's been Ottawa's biggest difficulty, Game 2 against Pittsburgh being the recent example. Very talented Ottawa teams have lost in past playoffs due to inconsistency and failure to show up every night. Talent wise, this Ottawa team matches or surpasses any of the teams left in these playoffs. However, grit, poise and consistency are just as important in the playoffs, especially in tight games and close series. If Ottawa can develop that "every shift counts every night" mentality, they will go a long way. If not, this could be their last series. Ottawa in 5.

Hey Ben - that's an excellent detailed look at the parts of these teams - I agree with everything you've said. But what you left out was synergy. If Ottawa can hang on to that elusive trait they can not only beat the Devils, but can go on to take the cup given the depth they have and the amount of talent. Having said that, N.J. is one of those sneaky teams that doesn't look all flashy and dangerous (except between the pipes) and they can surprise everyone.
If the Sens come out of the gate with their tails on fire looking like it's game 7 of the finals every time they play they will win the series in 5. If they fall asleep a couple of times, which they are prone to doing, it will take 6 and maybe even 7.

Ideally, I'd like to see Ottawa win it in six games but history tells us that it will be a long, protracted, low-scoring battle and if it goes to a Game 7, New Jersey will win by sheer dint of its suffocating trap-style of hockey.
If Ottawa's big guns click, the goaltending remains solid and the defense doesn't crack the series will be over in six. If Ottawa stumbles now and Brodeur remains hot and the E-G-G line produces and defense holds up, then Jersey will take it in either five or seven.

Can't see myself watching this one. I'm not a big Senators fan (in fact I'm not one at all and no I'm not a Habs or a Leafs fan!)) and I think the Devils defense will make this series slow. If I was a Sens fan, I wouldn't be crowing about this one right away, the Devils seem to be starting to peak at the right time. Brodeur is starting to get back to form and the Sens are playing a solid playoff playoff team that has garnered a great deal of success. These guys aren't young and inexperienced like the Penguins, teh Sens are going to have their work cut out for them. I think the Rangers/ Sabres series will be an exciting one.
I wasn't impresses with the first round matchups with the exception of the Canucks/Stars. Unfortunately those games were on very late here on the East Coast. Of course, I still stayed up for them. I hope the officiating improves in round 2, it was lacklustre in the first round.

Devils will take the series in 7 games. Ottawa has great scoring depth and strong defence which does well in the regular season, however the Senators train is shaky riding Emery to try to win the Stanley Cup. Patrick Lalime looked good playing in Ottawa and so does Ray Emery. In tough defensive series the goaltending wins, and Brodeur has the edge in this series. The high scoring Senators will put up a good fight but without a star goalie it will be another short post season.

I think New Jersey in 5 or 6 games for 4 reasons.
Number 1, this is not Pittsburgh, so Ottawa will not be able to dance around NJ, nor will they look as dominant as they thought they were.
Number 2, Ottawa does not have home ice (Magical Lou will match Madden, Brylin and Pandolfo against Ottawa's powerful trio) and I think that after the first 2 games it will be 2-0 NJ and Ottawa does not have the heart or desire to claw their way back.
Number 3, because of the line matching for the first 2 games Spezza, Alfredsson and Heatley will combine for minimal points and I think that NJ's 2 other lines can outplay Ottawa's 2 other lines.
Number 4, Ottawa has been waiting for 7-8 days losing all momentum they may have had after the 1st round. NJ had to come back from being down 2-1 and will have a perfect 3 days rest.
Also a side note, for those that think NJ is boring, I would rather have 3 cups in my trophy case playing for a so-called boring team, than losing every year in the playoffs and having nothing to show for it.
Go Ducks Go!!!!!!

Agreeing with Ben. New Jersey's going to put up a fight, most definately, but they're not going to be able to fully shut down Ottawa's depth. Mad kudos for Martin Brodeur though.
For the Senators, Anton Volchenkov and Chris Phillips are undeniably going to be huge for the Senators. Parise and Gomez will have a harder time scoring against Ray Emery because most likely, they'll be against Volchenkov-Phillips.
Dany Heatley, I think, will go back to his primary role of scoring. I really see Jason Spezza becoming that player Ottawa's organization wants to be. Of course he's young and has time to grow, it's clearly forming.
Though a Senators fan, not being biased. I truly believe Ottawa is the better team.

Let's size them up, shall we?
The Ottawa Senators have a multitude of talent. The Spezza-Alfredsson-Heatley line was very productive in the first series, and all four lines demonstrated a commitment to scoring goals and making the big hits and plays. In net, Ray Emery, while not brilliant, has improved immeasurably since his last playoff run and got better and better throughout the first round.
The New Jersey Devils are perennial contenders. Martin Brodeur is a titanic force of goaltending, and while he looked shaky in the first 4 games of the Tampa-Jersey series, he came on strong and looks in good form. They have produced some outstanding players in the form of Zach Parise and Scott Gomez, but the EGG line has been inconsistent thus far. Defensively, the trap is their game and they play it exceptionally well.
Contrasted, I give the Senators the edge. While Brodeur is a tough nut to crack, the Senators with their incredibly deep lines can apply even more of the pressure that Lecavalier and co visited on the Devils. I think the Devils will have trouble dealing with the gritty goal-scoring prowess of the Senators, and they'll find the hefty defense more challenging than Tampa's.
