Twitter's new standalone video app is hot right now. A little
too hot, perhaps.
Vine, a service that allows users to create and share 6-second-long videos, has been getting more than its fair share of buzz since it was launched by the social media giant Thursday.
Some are calling it the "
instagram of video," while others seem certain the app will fizzle away within weeks like so many other hot-new-things that came before it.
Vine will fail. Because it is futile to try and create Instagram for video. It is a different experience, different use case.Kfir Pravda

Love it or hate it, Vine has people talking -- and downloading. It's currently the App Store's 6th most-downloaded free app. Unfortunately, the service's meteoric growth couldn't come without a few growing pains.

On Monday morning, criticism intensified when a graphic sex act tagged "#porn" and "#nsfwvine" somehow got selected as an "editor's pick," appearing on the home screen of the Vine app and in every member's video feed.
The video was removed from Vine at approximately 10 a.m. ET after being on editor's picks for hours,
prompting Twitter to apologize for what a spokeswoman called a "human error."

The app, which currently has no age limit, earlier this month passed Apple's strict guidelines on nudity and suggestive content.
This flub prompted Apple to remove Vine from it's own editor's choice promotion in the App Store, though it hasn't banned the app outright,
as it did with Toronto-based photo sharing app 500px earlier this month for similar reasons.

Twitter, whose censorship-free stance is well established, disabled the #porn hashtag from the search option Monday afternoon -- but that hasn't stopped related tags like #NSFW (not safe for work) and #PornVines from thriving.
A Twitter spokesperson
told TechCrunch.com that if enough users report a piece of content as inappropriate, a warning message would be added in front of it, ensuring that a viewer must click through before viewing the video.

Many are pointing out that Vine isn't unique in this "porn problem", however. The internet is simply teeming with pornographic content and people who want to make, distribute and consume it.
"As virtually every new video or photo-sharing service has shown us since the dawn of the Internet, from Flickr to ChatRoulette, it's very difficult to keep these sites or apps G-rated," wrote The Atlantic Wire's Adam Clark Estes in a post titled
Vine has a porn problem because, of course it does. "So the companies either learn how to police it well, like Flickr does, or they wither and die, as ChatRoulette did,"
