Time to fall back. (Reuters)Twice a year, most Canadians change their clocks for daylight time and twice a year, we write about it. And the most popular comments on those stories call for the end of daylight time. And this year, as we look forward to an extra hour of sleep this weekend as daylight time ends, is no exception.
- "DST is a relic of a bygone era and accomplishes nothing in modern times. Rather than people having to cope with a pointless time change twice a year, we should just stop doing it entirely. Pick a time and stick with it. Life gets easier for everyone," said Tridus.
But others didn't like the idea of sleeping through the first couple of hours of daylight in the summer and say shifting an hour of daylight to the summer evening makes sense.
- "I totally disagree. Modern times or not it's been proven that people sleep better when it's dark and are happier when the sun is shining. Why not maximize this?" replied A.Nonymous.
- "They don't do DST in Japan, and the consequence of that is the sun sets at 7:30 in the summer and rises at 4:30 a.m.," said ten-of-spades.
Most Canadians switch daylight time and back, with one notable exception.
- "DST makes no sense to me. Saskatchewan is right!" said AlbertaGent.
Actually, Saskatchewan stays on daylight time all year round, but the sentiment is there: stopping messing with the clocks twice a year. "Pick a time and stick with it."
In Russia and Belarus, they've decided to stay on summer time permanently. But when it was tried in the U.K. in the late 1960s, people in Northern Ireland and Scotland didn't much like waking up in darkness and waiting till 10 a.m. for sunrise.
Under the constitution, the decision to observe daylight time is up to the province. Do you want your province to stay on daylight time permanently? Let us know what you think.
