Will you be getting a flu shot from a pharmacist this year?

Ontario's flu shot campaign gets a boost with more professionals regulated to dispense the vaccine. . (THE CANADIAN PRESS/Pawel Dwulit)Flu shot season officially kicks off in Ontario today, and this year residents will have more options than ever when it comes to where they can get immunized.

Pharmacists are now allowed to dole the vaccine out to anyone over the age of five thanks to recent regulatory changes made by the government of Ontario.

The province announced last month that approximately 600 pharmacies would be set up for immunization this fall, with more to come in 2013.

Minister of health Deb Matthews was scheduled to receive the shot from a pharmacist herself during a live press conference Monday morning.

"Providing the flu shot in pharmacies across Ontario, with pharmacists giving the vaccine, makes sense. It's convenient and easy," reads the Ministry of Health's flu shot information web page. "Pharmacies are highly accessible to Ontarians. Sixty-three per cent of Ontarians live within walking distance of one or more of the 3,500 pharmacies across Ontario. Approximately 90 per cent live within driving distance (2-5 kms)."

Despite a recent report that suggests flu vaccines are not as effective as public health messaging suggests, Canadians are still being urged to get immunized.

Many have already to declared their intention to get a flu shot this season, but others are strongly opposed to the idea of either getting the shot from a pharmacist, or getting the shot at all.
