Sparkling vampire cruise set to hit B.C. and Alaska

A cruise for fans of the sparkling vampire genre is taking reservations for their Alaska and B.C. voyage. (vampsatsea.com)If spending a week at sea among Twilight fans in full vampire costume sounds like your idea of a vacation, you're in luck.

After a successful first run of their "Vamps at Sea" cruise, Holland America announced this week that a second vampire cruise will be taking place next August.

The theme for 2013's cruise is "vampires that sparkle."

The sparkling vampire genre, it should be noted, was created by Stephenie Meyer for her incredibly popular Twilight series.

One might speculate that the cruise line is trying to cash in on a years-long vampire craze fueled by entertainment franchises like Twilight, HBO's True Blood and The Vampire Diaries, but Vamps at Sea creator Linda Wolf says that it was her life-long love for vampire culture that inspired the idea.

"It just so happens that I am also a fan of vampire genre so I thought it would be great fun to have a vampire-themed cruise," she writes on the cruise website. "When you combine the unparalled beauty of Alaska, with a group of fangtastic folks who love vampire movies, TV shows and books, you will have the time of your life (or after life)!"

Special activities planned for those aboard the sparkling vampire cruise include costume contests, late night disco parties, photo shoots, vampire trivia and a "Sparkling Vampire Ball & Cocktail Party with original vampalicious drinks!"

Celebrity guests for this particular voyage have not yet been announced, but the 2012 cruise included Dacre Stoker, author and great grand-nephew of Bram Stoker, as well as John Edgar Browning, a PhD Candidate at SUNY and one of the world's leading authorities in vampire lore.

The cruise website notes that vampire events only take place late at night and during cruising days, not during the ship's time in port. This leaves vacationers plenty of time to explore the beautiful scenery at ports in Alaska and British Columbia.
