Reaction to U.S. Consulate attack

Categories: Community

The attack on the U.S. Consulate that killed the ambassador to Libya and three other Americans attracted the most comments of any story on CBCNews.ca today.

Some of the comments focused on Libya.

  • "So this is how they show their gratitude for everything the US did during their 'revolution'?" said BCBarby.

  • "Didn't we recently have aircraft involved in assisting the liberation of this joint?" asked RedDogAB.

But many members of the CBC Community took aim at the movie that has sparked the protests in many Arab countries.

  • "I think the 'protesters' have achieved the opposite effect as they intended. I never would have heard of this obviously cruddy film, but now I'm going to go look it up," said Bloonose.

  • "You will be disappointed. It's a piece of garbage. Any sane person would be embarrassed to admit they produced such an awful, tasteless, childish work. It was obviously meant only to offend. It's not even funny. Borat is more sensitive," replied oasisneko.

  • "Sam Bacile, who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, wrote, produced and directed the two-hour film, Innocence of Muslims. Looks like Sam got what he was looking for. Funny thing is if someone made a movie that was anti-Semitic like The Eternal Jew it would be quickly removed from YouTube and the person condemned and even arrested," said TorontoProud.

  • "Only, there is so much anti-Semitic content on Youtube that you could probably spend days and not see it all, and that's just the stuff in English. Moreover, Egyptian and Turkish television have each shown television series that have been overtly anti-Semitic. I don't see any arrests being made. I think, maybe, at most, someone may have written a strongly worded letter of complaint," replied Charlie_H_E.

  • "The US really needs to have hate speech laws...this film, as described in this article, can only be classed as hate speech and would likely (?) be illegal in Canada and elsewhere... Sam Bacille should be repudiated for this work," said awhLuh.

  • "No, the Islamic world has to learn how to control its emotions," replied Katana.

  • "How exactly do you define hate speech? Some may be offended by a statement, some may not be offended, some may find it funny, and some may take it in the wrong context," said CPC-Libertarian.
