It's also broadcasting music.

Musician will.i.am premiered his latest single, Reach for the Stars, in a broadcast to Earth from the rover on Mars.

According to Leland Melvin, NASA's associate administrator for education, the song was the first to be beamed to Earth from another planet.

The song was played during an event where members of the team that landed curiosity of Mars answered questions from students about the mission and the technology behind it.

It was fitting because, according to a NASA press release, will.i.am's song is 'a new composition about the singer's passion for science, technology and space exploration.'

Over on Twitter, reaction ranged from excitement to despair.
