Chinese swimmers wear 'face-kini' masks to avoid sun

Categories: Community

On beaches in China, sunscreen and big, floppy hats just aren't cutting it as far as sun protection is concerned, so some swimmers are opting for full face masks, dubbed "face-kinis."

The masks, sometimes worn with swimsuits that cover the body from neck to toe, are a trend seen on the public beaches in Qingdao, a coastal tourist town on the East China Sea.

The face-kini is the latest way that women in China are avoiding the sun's rays while still enjoying the outdoors. Pale skin is traditionally associated with female beauty in China because a tan is associated with working outdoors as a farmer or peasant.

The mask was invented about seven years ago by a Chinese woman. They're now in mass production and sell at local stores for 15 to 25 yuan, or about $2.50 to $4.

The face-kini can be paired with colour co-ordinating wetsuits, or more traditional one- and two-piece bathing suits.

And although the mask was originally intended only as sun protection, it also repels insect bites and jellyfish stings.
