We'll be updating this gallery throughout the month with each day's photo pick. You'll be able to check out all this month's submissions at once!
May 7:
Today's photo comes from TheVancouverGuy, who submitted his shot "Jellies" to our CBC Community Flickr group.
The colour and shape of these jellyfish at the Vancouver Aquarium suggest brilliant orange flowers in full bloom. But watch out for those petals!
Thanks for the submission!
May 6:
Today's photo comes from CBC Community member jvmac817, who sent in this shot titled "My Ball" from Tecumseh, Ont. west of Winsdor.
To our dismay, the CBC Community Team has found precious few pictures that closely follow our May photo contest theme. We've received several beautiful photos of flowers and flower fields, but we were looking for flower-inspired photos first and foremost!
In the absence of these, then, we turn to jvmac's photo of a flower that doesn't look like a typical flower. This bulb looks more like a tiny red cabbage - an unpleasant surprise to the wasp digging for pollen.
Thanks for the submission!
- May 5:
Today's photo comes from CBC Community member Five Cents, and is titled "Tropical Flower?" It was taken in Vancouver.
The plastic red ball takes the role of a flower, complete with a green "stem." It's enough, apparently, to trick this butterfly.
We like the idea of using something as banal as a plastic ball replacing a flower - something praised for its natural beauty. The seeming contradiction makes for a lovely picture with a clever idea at its core.
Thanks for the submission!
May 4
Today's photo submission shows us flowers where you wouldn't normally expect to see them: in the middle of a rock.
CBC Community member ocealuvr sent in this picture, titled "Mussel flowers," from Prince Edward Island.
"Mussels are in bloom in P.E.I. and their beautiful blue and iridescent white shells look just like petals," oceanluvr wrote.
The mottled blue-grey and white of the mussel shells make a beautiful stand-in for a flower's petals.
We love the idea of using a natural medium to represent another. It's fauna meets flora - to the extreme!
Thanks for the photo!
May 3:
You may not be able to tell without smelling (or tasting) these flowers, but they're made entirely from chocolate! Pretty and delicious -- how can you go wrong?
This photo, called "Chocolate Bloom" comes to us from CBC Community member Ekattpics.
The shooter tells us it was taken at a hotel in Las Vegas, but we're dying to know where we can find one of these in Canada.
This is a great photo of a great creative take on florals.
May 2:
Our first pick for May's flower-themed photo contest is called "Empire state of mind" and comes to us through the CBC News Your Voice Flickr Pool.
Flickr member DoMoreThanExist took this photo of in New York City's Central Park, at the site of "Strawberry Fields," a John Lennon memorial site.
We love the way yellow Gerber daisies outline the peace sign at the center of this memorial. A creative twist on May flowers indeed, and a very fitting "flower power" contest entry.
