With the Vancouver Canucks out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Ottawa Senators are the lone Canadian team remaining to vie for the NHL championship.
Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will return Monday after suffering a concussion in Game 2. (Bruce Bennett/Getty Images)No hockey team based in Canada has won Lord Stanley's cup since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens beat the L.A. Kings. (Coincidentally, the Canucks were eliminated from the first round of playoffs in the 2012 cup race by the Kings on Sunday night.)
In recent years, the Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators and, just last year, the Canucks have all reached the Stanley Cup finals, only to lose to American teams.
That's not to say that some Canadians don't cheer for American teams. Support for the Boston Bruins is strong in the Maritimes, while parts of southern Ontario cheer for the Buffalo Sabres or the Detroit Red Wings rather than the underperforming Toronto Maple Leafs.
When it comes to the playoffs, some NHL fans will switch allegiances once their own teams are knocked out or fail to make the playoffs.
Are you throwing your support behind the Senators? Why or why not? Do you tend to cheer for Canadian teams over American ones, or does the team's city not matter? Let us know in the comments below.
