Should The Price is Right continue to offer trips to the Calgary Stampede?

The U.S. game show The Price is Right gave away a trip to the Calgary Stampede on Wednesday as part of a western-themed showcase of prizes that included Alberta-made cowboy boots and a Toyota pickup truck.

(Damian Dovarganes/Associated Press)But former host Bob Barker, a prominent animal rights activist, is calling the prize "utterly disgusting."

"This Calgary Stampede is just an egregious example of inhumane treatment for animals," Barker said from his home in Hollywood, Calif.

"If I had been there, it would never in the world have happened," he said.

An official with the Calgary Stampede said a lot of progress has been made in the area of animal safety.

"We're proud of our animal care and the way we treat animals," said Doug Fraser. "We're very proud of the way we've advanced our animal care

Two horses died in the Stampede's chuckwagon race in 2011, down from six in 2010. One of the most recent deaths resulted in a record fine from the chuckwagon safety commission, $12,500 for driver error.
