February photo contest: Pick of the day

Categories: Community

Today's photo comes from Kristina P., who sent in this photo taken in Busan, South Korea.

"I lived in Busan, South Korea, last year and these photos are from the Busan Tower. Couples put 'love locks' on the fences as a sign that their love will last forever."

Couples affix interlocking padlocks, sometimes affixing a note with their names or a message, to mark their everlasting love. Many are attached to fences and railings of bridges before the couples throw the keys into the river below.

The practice gained popularity in recent years, but some cities have taken heavy steel cutters to the crowd-sourced exhibits.

Roughly 40 love locks were removed from Toronto's Humber Bridge in December. In 2010, Paris officials removed thousands of locks from the Pont de l'Archevêché. In both cases new locks have since appeared to take their place.

Thanks for the submission, Kristina!

We'll be posting your best shots with the theme of "Love" each day in February. At the end of the month, we'll select five finalists and ask you to vote for your favourite.
