The Bachelor Canada will debut in the fall, Chris Harrison, host of The Bachelor, told Citytv viewers Monday morning.

As with its American counterpart, the show will feature a man hoping to find love with one of a dozen or so female contestants. Contestants will face possible elimination each week in what is inevitably described as "the most dramatic rose ceremony yet" - until two remain. In the show's finale, the bachelor typically proposes to one and breaks the heart of the other.

To be eligible, contestants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents at least 19 years or older, and single. They must also never have been convicted of an indictable or summary offence, or had restraining orders taken out against them.

Vancouver-based Force Four Entertainment will produce the show.

"Canada is brimming with eligible bachelors and bachelorettes and we're excited to offer them the opportunity to embark on their own quest for love through this entertaining series," said Claire Freeland, the show's executive producer.

Reaction to the announcement was mixed.

Canada has already produced versions of other popular U.S. reality shows, including Canada's Next Top Model, Canadian Idol and So You Think You Can Dance Canada. All of them were cancelled for the 2012 season.

Would you apply to be a contestant on The Bachelor Canada? Why or why not? Should Canada produce its own versions of any other U.S.-based reality shows? Share your ideas in the field below.
