What's the most important issue facing MPs in the House?

Categories: Politics

MPs go back to the House of Commons Monday after a six-week break and are facing some unfinished business from last year and some important new business.

What is the most important issue facing Prime Minister Harper and the House in the coming months? (Adrian Wyld, CP)A date for the next federal budget has yet to be set, but with Prime Minister Stephen Harper's comments about pension reform at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the issue is already on the minds of many people on Parliament Hill.

Bill C-10, the omnibus crime bill, is already in the Senate, but could be amended there and sent back to the House. The Conservatives have long promised to scrap the long-gun registry, and that bill, C-19, is still in the House.

A copyright reform bill, C-11, has been stuck in first reading since it was introduced in September. The high-profile opposition to similar legislation in the U.S. - SOPA and PIPA - may make C-11 a sleeper issue for the House.

A conflict with the provinces over health-care funding is also looming, and a trade deal between Canada and the European Union that was to have been finalized in 2011 could wrap up this year.
