The new year is typically a time of reflection, rejuvenation and renewal. It's also a good time to ask ourselves who we want to be and what we want to do in the next twelve months -- and because 2012 is a leap year, we even get one extra day to accomplish our goals!

On a recent episode of Toronto radio show Metro Morning, Ritu Bhasin of bhasin consulting gave some tips on how to make realistic resolutions, and how best to keep them.

For instance, to approach the all-too-common goal of losing weight after the weeks-long gorging session that includes Christmas, New Year's and possibly American Thanksgiving, the most important step is to make a concrete plan on how one should approach it.

"To lose weight, how many pounds do you want to be losing a month? How many times does that mean you're going to be working out a week? How long are you going to working out for, and what are you going to be doing?" says Bhasin.

CBC Edmonton's John Robertson solicited advice from fitness instructor Kira Cranna on how to lose weight, and local chef Chris Hyrnyk to learn how to cook healthy foods.

So, what are your resolutions? Do you plan to lose the holiday bulge, or have something a little more ambitious, like Winnipeg DJ Marcel Williams' year without sex? Let us know in the comments section below.
