The @sweden Twitter account will feature one Swedish citizen each week.(Twitter.com)Swedish citizens have taken over the @sweden Twitter account, with the blessing of the Swedish government, according to Mashable.

One Swedish citizen will take control of @sweden each week, complete with a customized profile picture and bio. The initiative, called Curators of Sweden, is run by VisitSweden, the country's official tourism and travel information group.

The first curator to interact with @sweden's 10,000-and-climbing followers is Jack Werner, a Stockholm-based writer and marketer.

" In an age of mass communication and increasing globalization, a country depends largely on how it is perceived abroad," says the Curators of Sweden website.

"Sweden's development and future prosperity depend on strong relations with the outside world and a more active exchange with other countries in many areas. This is only possible, if more people are familiar with Sweden and become interested in the country and what it has to offer."

An @canada Twitter account exists, but is not owned by the government. It has only two recorded tweets, with one from September suggesting the owner of the account wishes to give it to the government.

What would you do as the voice of Canada on Twitter? Can the @sweden project spread awareness of the country and its citizens, or is it a hollow marketing ploy? Let us know in the comments section below.
