Should Syrian websites be removed from Canadian web servers?

Categories: Science & Technology, World

(CBC) A handful of Canadian internet companies may be breaking federal sanctions on Syria.  A report by a University of Toronto think-tank has found a digital crumb trail connecting Syrian websites to servers here in Canada.

The Citizen Lab and Canada Centre for Global Security Studies says 17 Syrian websites -- including the Ministries of Culture, Transport and Social Affairs and Labour -- are hosted in Canada through intermediary companies. Many of those sites reside on servers owned by iWeb, a Montreal-based company.

The report cautions, however, that the removal of any organization's website from web hosting services "must be treated as a potential infringement on freedom of speech and access to information."

The United Nations estimates that more than 3,500 people have been killed since anti-government protests began last March. So how should Canadian companies respond, if at all? Should they remove the Syrian websites from their servers? Let us know in the comments section below.
