Peanut butter prices will be spiking in the new year because of a peanut shortage in the U.S., Kraft Canada confirms.
The company says a rise in the price of peanuts will push the price of peanut butter up by 35 per cent, the QMI Agency reports.
A hot, dry summer in the southern U.S. states has cut peanut production, and farmers are also planting more profitable crops, such as cotton.
U.S. peanut butter producers have already bumped up their prices, but this is the first confirmation that prices are heading up on Canadian store shelves.
These are dark times for (arguably) Canada's favourite spread. Once a staple of lunch bags, peanut butter - and even peanut butter substitute - is banned in many Canadian schools because of allergy concerns.
How would you deal with a peanut butter price jump? Would you give up your PB&J because of the rising cost? Or would you pay the higher price? Let us know what you think.
