Police in London, Ont., moved in on Occupy London protesters and removed their tents and other structures from Victoria Park overnight.
Police in London, Ont., moved against an Occupy protesters' encampment early Wednesday morning, taking away their tents. (Kerry McKee/CBC)It was the first time an Occupy protest was forcibly removed in Canada. Although there was a lot of shouting and swearing as police put the tents in City of London pickup trucks, no violence was reported.
Some protesters said they felt betrayed, said CBC reporter Kerry McKee. The protesters said the city had told them at 10 p.m. they would be willing to negotiate. After hundreds of protesters sympathetic to the Occupy movement left the park and others began to settle down to sleep for the night, the police moved in.
Police backed off at 6 a.m. on Wednesday because the remaining protesters were no longer in violation of the city bylaw that states parks are closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Other Occupy protests in Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria are also under threat of eviction.
Do you agree with the eviction of the Occupy London protesters? Do you think the police acted appropriately? Should other Occupy protests be evicted? Let us know what you think.
