Updated December 6: Gun control advocates and Opposition leaders marked the anniversary
of the tragic shootings at Montreal's École Polytechnique Tuesday with
calls to action against the Harper government's plans to scrap the
long-gun registry.
Rifles are pictured under lock and key at a Calgary retailer and shooting facility. The Harper government is expected to soon introduce a bill to finally scrap the gun registry. (Jeff McIntosh/Canadian Press)Debate on the bill wouldn't be able to start until at least Tuesday.
Scrapping the registry has been a long-standing plan of the Tories, who have called it wasteful and ineffective.
Some firearms groups want Ottawa to go further and kill the current gun licensing scheme altogether.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is urging the feds to do away with the current Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) and return to the old Firearms Acquisition Certificates (FAC).
Introduced in 1979, the FAC allowed people over the age of 18 to acquire a firearm. The certificates were valid for five years and were not subject to renewal because firearms owners required the certificate to acquire, not possess, a gun.
The Firearms Act of 1995 did away with the certificate system. Firearms owners now require a PAL to buy and possess a firearm.
PAL applicants must pass a test, fill out a detailed questionnaire and their spouse must sign off on the process. Once obtained, a PAL is valid for five years -- but licensed firearms owners are continuously screened.
Should Ottawa scrap the Possession and Acquisition Licence? Why or why not? How would you like the federal government to regulate guns in Canada?

A crowd of about 250 mostly female participants from a conference
organized by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union and the
Coalition for Gun Control rallied on the steps of Parliament Hill for
partisan speeches and a rose ceremony to name the 14 young lives lost.
