A cyclist died Tuesday after losing her balance and veering into the path of a car in downtown Ottawa.

The accident occurred this morning between Ottawa's Metcalfe and O'Connor streets, and witnesses say it was triggered when a driver opened the door of a vehicle at the side of the road.

The cyclist believed to be in her 30s, hit the open door, lost her balance and crashed to her left into the path of a following Volkswagen sedan, witnesses said.

"Doorings" are a common cause of bicycle accidents - so much so that earlier this year, American cyclists in Illinois asked state transportation officials to start keeping track of the number of accidents that involve car doors hitting unsuspecting bikers.

Should there be stricter laws or fines regarding dooring accidents? Why or why not? What are your biggest bike safety concerns? Share your comments below.
