It's the local controversy that's made national headlines and still has CBCNews.ca commenters talking. The latest news in the saga of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, has police Chief Bill Blair saying Ford did not call 911 staff "bitches."
"The content of those conversations has been misrepresented by what are claimed to be 'several anonymous sources,' presumably from within the [Toronto Police Service], in which case I have to set the record straight. I have listened to the three emergency calls. The mayor did not use the word 'bitches,' attributed to him by those 'several anonymous sources,'" Blair's statement to the public reads.
Despite the mayor's interventions, readers are overwhelmingly calling for the tapes themselves to be made public.
Here's what people are saying.
- "Why can't the public listen to the tape for themselves?" - doctorvideo
- "We don't want to know what he didn't say. We want to know what he actually said. How many times did Mayor Ford call 911? Was it an emergency worthy of a 911 call? Mayor Ford... under privacy laws, you can ask for a copy of the tapes and release them yourself. Why is the Chief of Police at all involved in this? Time to hear the tapes. All of them." - moosep
- "Why can't we all hear the tapes ?? It seems to me I remember other 911 tapes being made public. If he is innocent he should be demanding they be played to clear his name." - indierev
- "If that is true then the police chief should have no problem whatsoever releasing the full audio recordings of Ford's 911 calls. Let's get those full audio recordings released and if the mayor and the police cheif are lying then they should be removed from their positions immediately." - Edm AB Guy
Others are less concerned about what he said and feel the calling 911 was in itself, inappropriate.
- "I never thought the issue was what he said or didn't say anyway. I don't particualry care. The issue for me is him calling 9/11 when there was clearly no emergency. Even if we beleive he thought his life was in danger he clearly was able to escape, by simply walking away from the assailant (lol) and going inside to the safety of his house." - lhjnsn61
- "Rob Ford classifies Mary Walsh and CBC cameraman in his driveway as an emergency? No matter what, it was an inappropriate use of the 911 service." - JimmySerious
- "At this point it no longer even matters what Ford did or did not call the 911 dispatcher. He will forever go down as the mayor who had to call 911 because he couldn't handle a harmless comedian." - ptwonline
