The union representing 6,800 Air Canada flight attendants says it has cancelled its planned strike for Thursday at midnight, after the Canada Industrial Relations Board said employees must remain on the job while their contract dispute is being reviewed.

The federal government is referring the labour dispute between Air Canada and its flight attendants to the Canada Industrial Relations Board, a move that will prevent the employees from going on strike Thursday, Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said.

Labour Minister Lisa Raitt said Monday the federal government will intervene if Air Canada flight attendants go on strike Thursday.

Air CanadaThe 6,800 flight attendants have rejected a tentative deal reached between their union and the airline and are poised to go on strike at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, the union has said.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees said 65 per cent of the flight attendants who cast ballots voted to reject management proposals.

Air Canada said it hopes to avoid a work stoppage but will maintain a partial schedule in the event of a strike.
