How much are you spending on food every month?

mi-grocery-bill-300-istock.jpgThe percentage of household spending that goes to food has fallen significantly in recent years, Statistics Canada says.

In 1969, 18.7 per cent of average Canadian household spending went to food. By 2009, the number had dropped to 10.2 per cent.

The 1969 figure meant food ate up the highest percentage of spending, beating out shelter, personal taxes, clothing and transportation. These days, food is near the bottom of that list.

Statisticians credit higher average incomes, greater spending discretion and consumption limits for the change.

"The thing about food compared to other consumption items is that there's a bit of an upper limit on how much you can consume," said Bradley Snider, a Statistics Canada statistician.
