According to the Salvation Army, donations to Canadian food banks went up in 2011. (Michael Brandy, Deseret News/Associated Press )

Despite - or perhaps because of - the gloomy economic outlook, The Salvation Army is reporting a rise in donations to food banks in Canada.

Donations have in 2011 have gone up for 32 per cent of the charity's food service programs.

Andrew Burditt, national director of marketing and communications for The Salvation Army, calls it good news.

"I think we can be heartened by the fact that Canadians have responded," he says.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, have you donated to your local food bank? Are you more likely to give at certain times of year?

(This survey is not scientific. Results are based on readers' responses.)
