What has been the most important website in the last 20 years?

On Aug. 6, 1991, the first World Wide Web page went live to the public, largely unnoticed outside the world of networked computer scientists and engineers.

World Wide WebIn the 20 years since, the web has become a part of the daily lives of billions of people around the world.

British physicist Tim Berners-Lee posted a summary of his World Wide Web project on the usenet newsgroup alt.hypertext: "The WWW project aims to allow all links to be made to any information anywhere."

Berners-Lee first proposed the WWW in 1989 and the technology was used to share data, text and news among scientists at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. His link to the first public website, hosted at the rather cryptic URL nxoc01.cern.ch, opened the technology to the world.
