Which food-eating contest would you most like to enter?

It's July 4, meaning our neighbours to the south are celebrating Independence Day.

Festivities for Independence Day aren't all that different from the activities Canadians use to mark Canada Day. Fireworks, family barbecues, outdoor fairs, concerts and carnivals are all ways Americans acknowledge their country's special day.

But there's one July 4th activity with no Canadian equivalent: the Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Competition, in which contestants eat as many hotdogs as they can in 12 minutes. (Last year's winner was Joey Chestnut, who ate 54 dogs and buns in 10 minutes.)

The hot dog eating contest is just one of many "professional eating contests" organized by Major League Eating. There are also contests for eating asparagus, mayonnaise, fruitcake, pizza, baby back ribs and poutine, among many others.
