His wife, Barbara Amiel, fainted when the sentence was read out in a Chicago courtroom.

He will likely be in prison for less than a year because of reductions for good behaviour.

Black's lawyers had pleaded for leniency. He is required to surrender himself to authorities in about six weeks.

Originally posted at 10:30 a.m. ET: The possibility that Conrad Black could return to Canada after his incarceration for fraud and obstruction of justice has prompted an angry reaction on Twitter, the CBC's Susan Bonner says.

Black is in court Friday in Chicago, where a judge will resentence him on the charges. He could go free or serve more jail time.

U.S. Supreme Court last summer curtailed the "honest services" laws used to convict him, triggering the resentencing hearing.

Black, born in Montreal, gave up his Canadian citizenship in 2001in order to join the British House of Lords. Recently, however, he has said he wants to return to Canada.

"Black does not belong in Canada, he forsook his home!" wrote @myuniquename4me.

"I don't want him back in Canada," wrote @Monctonsnowman. "He insulted us when he left here and became a Brit. Victims want him to do his time."

Returning may be difficult because of his criminal record. He would need special permission, such as an extradition agreement or ministerial order.
