G8 report: Are you satisfied with the auditor general's report?

Categories: Canada

An auditor general's report about last year's G8 conference suggests the government showed a lack of transparency when it asked MPs to fund $50 million worth of projects in cabinet minister Tony Clement's riding.

ag-John-Wiersema-220.jpgWhen MPs were asked to consider spending $83 million to reduce border congestion, the government did not tell them that $50 million of it was intended for 32 infrastructure projects in the Muskoka region in Clement's riding, interim AG John Wiersema said Thursday.

Wiersema said he's also "very concerned" that there appears to be no documentation to explain why or how the 32 projects were selected. Furthermore, the projects were approved by Clement himself, who was minister of infrastructure at the time.

"Supporting documentation is important for transparency and for accountability," he said.

The report also found that costs for the G8 and G20 summits were overestimated, with the government spending $664 million of the $1.1 billion that Parliament approved.

Are you satisfied with the findings in the auditor general's report? How should government do things differently in the future? Let us know in the comments below.
