Wildfires in the central Alberta town of Slave Lake have forced hundreds of residents from their homes.

The town, located 210 kilometres north of Edmonton, remained cut off from the south by two wildfires measuring 700 and 2,200 hectares.

Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee confirmed that the town has lost its town hall and radio station, and a "substantial number" of homes and buildings.

Slave Lake has suffered a huge loss, Pillay-Kinnee told CBC News. "It is quite stark and devastating. You know, our firefighters are on the ground now trying to protect what is left in our community."

The highways were blocked 70 kilometres south of the town, and highway crews said they will probably be shut for a couple of days.
