The Green Party released its party platform Thursday, focusing on environmental priorities such as green jobs and carbon taxes.

The platform, called "Vision Green," is based on three major points: a smart economy, strong communities and true democracy, party leader Elizabeth May said at the announcement in Toronto.

The 130-page plan includes:

  • $540 million over three years for a national solar roof program.
  • $600 million over three years for energy retrofit for municipal, university, schools and hospitals.
  • Income splitting for families, including same-sex couples and single parents with working children -- to reduce the financial burden on individuals and families.
  • $2.1 billion over three years to reinvest in the national rail service.
  • Tuition credits for students who participate in a proposed municipal work program.
Funding for these initiatives would come from raising corporate taxes to 19 per cent from 16 per cent and eliminating subsidies on fossil fuels, and by cutting military spending by $8-billion over three years.
