Tributes to the late actor and comedian Roger Abbott have come pouring in on CBCNews.ca, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube following his death over the weekend.Abbott, one of the original cast members of the Royal Canadian Air Farce, died Saturday in Toronto at age 64.
Many of the comments posted below Abbott's obituary on CBCNews.ca referenced his characters and skits on the Air Farce TV show, which aired on CBC from 1980 to 2008.
- "Still can't sit in Tim Hortons without thinking about Roger Abbott and the gang. You were everything Canadian. Thanks for making Canada a little lighter," wrote Waterscapes.
- "I will miss his language-mangling Chrétien, his monotone Leonard Cohen, his gap-toothed Elton John, and his dim-witted G.W. Bush," said annakwan78 on YouTube.
- "A 21-chicken cannon salute to a wonderful comedian and Canadian icon. You will be greatly missed," offered JanMarRu.
On Facebook, Stephen Lee shared a memory of attending the taping of an episode of Air Farce's last regular season: "We thoroughly enjoyed the show - and Roger as usual was hilarious!"
Some commenters went further back - to Air Farce's radio days, which began in 1970 - for their memories.
- "Roger Abbott was part of one of the funniest groups of comedians Canada has ever produced. Their early bits on CBC Radio should be required teaching in arts departments across the country," said GeraldSkowronski.
- "The only thing that made church bearable growing up was knowing I could listen to the Air Farce on the drive home every Sunday. Thank you for many laughs and memories," said rplsf13.
- "I remember that for many years my Dad and I always turned on the radio on the weekends to catch Air Farce... I miss those days. RIP Roger," wrote David Mercer on Facebook.
- "In the 1970's my wife and I started listening to the Royal Canadian Air Farce on Sunday on the way to the cottage. It was on CBL 740 AM (then CBC's call numbers in Toronto) and we would slow down to make sure we heard the end of the program before getting out of range," said johnmctaggart.
- "I met him one on one after a symphony concert at a friend's home: loved him and feel he shone his light with meaning on us all," wrote Elisa Pauline Doyon Stewart on Facebook.
On Monday, Jian Ghomeshi, the host of CBC Radio's Q, interviewed Abbott's co-stars, Luba Goy and Don Ferguson, as well as comedian Rick Mercer, to share their thoughts on Abbott's death.
"The loss of their friend Roger is so painfully evident, wrote chefchic on the show's blog, of the interview. "I hope they all know that Roger will be very sadly missed."
