Political attack ads: What do you think of them?

Categories: Canada

The Green Party of Canada released an election-style attack ad Monday that slams smear campaigns and political mud slinging.

Party leader Elizabeth May said negative advertising by political parties turns off voters and subverts democracy.

However, much evidence suggests that attack ads do work, despite repeated claims that Canadians are tired of them, according to CBCNews.ca's Chris Carter.

"The Conservative poll numbers, for example, have mostly risen since the release of new ads targetting Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff began airing during such popular fare as hockey broadcasts and the Grammys," Carter wrote on the Inside Politics blog. "Or maybe the increase in voter support can be explained by the Conservatives' one 'positive' ad showing the prime minister hard at work at the nation's business."

"Perhaps the Greens hope they have hit upon the golden formula: turning the attack ad on itself."
