The federal Conservatives have introduced the 2011 budget in the House of Commons aimed at securing Canada's economic recovery.

The government is taking advantage of a rebounding economy to offer a wide range of small but strategic goodies in its budget, which is titled "A Low Tax Plan for Jobs and Growth."

Among the budget highlights:
  • No tax hikes or cuts, no major new spending programs and no substantial spending cuts.
  • Keeps government on track to for a balanced budget within six years through the combination of economic growth and spending restraints. The end of the federal stimulus program, by itself, will cut the 2011-12 deficit to $27.6 billion from a revised $40.5 billion in 2010-11.
  • A family caregiver tax credit of up to $300 for people caring for infirm spouses, common-law partners and children.
  • A top-up for the lowest third of seniors receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement, up to $50 a month for singles and $70 a month for couples
