New flooding in central Vietnam has killed 16 people, disaster officials say, bringing the death toll over the past month to 159.

The national floods and storms control committee says up to 100 centimetres of rain has pounded the region over the past week, forcing the evacuation of more than 40,000 people.

Officials said Thursday the latest deaths occurred in the provinces of Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan and Dak Lak. Two people are also missing in the floods.

National weather forecasters say more rain is expected in coming days.
