Mexican President Felipe Calderon is in Canada, thanking the RCMP for its help in fighting drug violence in his country. The president's visit calls attention to the issue of violence in Mexico, where powerful drug cartels have a tight grip on many aspects of life, particularly in the country's north.

In June 2009, the CBC's Carole MacNeil travelled to Mexico to learn about the violence that has gripped the country. Here's the 23-minute documentary that stemmed from her trip.
